Find the longest word
Most levels contain one word using nearly every letter. Finding it usually reveals the shorter answers hiding inside it.
Work by length
Match the empty slot against the answer list by letter count — far faster than reading top to bottom.
Do not skip the short ones
Three-letter words count the same as long ones and are the commonest reason a level stays unfinished.

Longest word first
Nearly every level has one answer using most of the letter set. Find it and the shorter words are usually fragments of it.
Sort by length in your head
Every answer here carries its letter count. Count the empty slot, then look only at answers of that length.
Watch for plurals
If the set contains an S, expect at least one plural. It is the single most-missed answer type in this game.
Prefixes and suffixes
RE-, UN-, -ER and -ING appear constantly. Testing them against the letter set finds words the eye skips.
