Compact boards reward system

With a short set you can genuinely work through the possibilities. Take the lengths in order instead of free-associating.

The longest answer shows the set

Every level page leads with it, so the letters are visible even though the game shows a ring.

Try the plural on everything

Adding S frequently yields another accepted answer, and on small boards those extras are a large share of the total.

Match the gap by counting

Counting empty squares narrows a slot faster than thinking about meaning. Every answer on a level page carries its length.

Doubled tiles are usable twice

Where the set repeats a letter, a single answer may use both — a common reason a valid word is dismissed.

The last one is usually short

On a compact board the final missing answer is far more often a common three-letter word than anything unusual.

How this Crossword Quest archive is put together

Every Crossword Quest puzzle on this site is imported from a structured source record rather than transcribed from a screenshot or copied from another answers page. On import each record is validated before it is allowed through: a puzzle missing its core data is left out of the archive instead of being published incomplete. That is why the count reads 19,999 rather than a rounder marketing number.

The archive is maintained by the Solved Archive editorial team, who play these games and use these pages themselves. Because Crossword Quest has a fixed catalogue that does not change once complete, this archive is finished rather than growing. Level 10,001 carries no answers in any source we hold and is the only number missing; every other level from 1 to 20,000 is here in full..
