Red Herring Answers
Four groups of four, plus the decoys planted to mislead you.
Red Herring Answers Explained
Red Herring gives you sixteen words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four — except that some of the words are deliberately planted to look like they belong somewhere they do not. This archive holds 3,529 puzzles and 56,460 answers, every puzzle listed with its complete grouping.
The whole game is the decoys. A word that obviously fits three different categories is doing its job, and the puzzle only resolves once you find the group it actually belongs to. Because of that, these pages list the full set together rather than one group at a time — seeing all sixteen is what makes the trap visible.
Puzzles are grouped into blocks of one hundred, and each page links to the puzzles either side of it so you can work back through the archive in order.

How Red Herring Works
The three moves that solve most puzzles in this game.
Find the group you are sure of
One category is usually unambiguous. Removing its four words shrinks the field sharply.
Distrust the obvious word
A word that fits several groups is almost always the planted one. It belongs to whichever group is left.
Solve by elimination
The last group needs no insight at all — it is whatever remains once the other twelve words are placed.
Red Herring Tips & Strategy
Six things that make the difference between stuck and solved.
The easiest word is the trap
If a word leaps out as belonging to a category, check whether it fits another one too. That is exactly the decoy the puzzle is built around.
Start with the group you are certain of
Four words removed from sixteen makes the rest far more tractable. Certainty first, cleverness second.
Count before you commit
If a category seems to have five candidates, one of them belongs elsewhere. The count is always exactly four.
Look for the boring category
Puzzles usually pair one obvious theme with three subtler ones. Finding the plain one first is the fastest route in.
Read all sixteen before grouping
Every puzzle page lists the full set together, because the decoy only shows up when you can see what else is on the board.
The last group is free
Solve three and the fourth needs no reasoning. Work toward that rather than trying to see all four at once.

How this Red Herring archive is put together
Every Red Herring puzzle on this site is imported from a structured source record rather than transcribed from a screenshot or copied from another answers page. On import each record is validated before it is allowed through: a puzzle missing its core data is left out of the archive instead of being published incomplete. That is why the count reads 3,529 rather than a rounder marketing number.
The archive is maintained by the Solved Archive editorial team, who play these games and use these pages themselves. Because Red Herring has a fixed catalogue that does not change once complete, this archive is finished rather than growing — all 3,529 puzzles are present. If you spot anything wrong, tell us via the contact page with the puzzle number and we can trace it straight back to its source record. Our full process is written up on the method page.
Solved Archive is an independent fan resource. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Blue Ox Technologies or any game developer. Game names and trademarks belong to their respective owners, and this archive exists to help players who are stuck, not to replace the game.
